Frequently Asked Questions
Do they need soaking first?
For anything beyond a light scattering, yes. Chia absorbs many times its weight in liquid and swells into a gel. Eaten dry by the spoonful and then washed down, it can swell on the way and feel uncomfortable, so soak it or take it with plenty of liquid.
How do I make chia pudding?
Two to three tablespoons to 200ml of milk or a plant alternative, stirred well, then stirred again after ten minutes so it does not set in clumps. Chill for a few hours or overnight. Add fruit or honey once it has thickened, not before.
Do they need grinding the way flax does?
No — chia is the easier of the two. The seed coat softens and breaks down readily, so whole seeds work as they are. That is also why chia forms a gel and flax does not to the same degree.
What do chia seeds give me nutritionally?
They are high in fibre, a good deal of it the soluble kind responsible for the gel, and they carry protein, alpha-linolenic acid and minerals including calcium and magnesium. A tablespoon is a modest portion and suits a varied diet rather than replacing one.
How are they best worked into everyday meals?
Whole seeds stir into porridge, yoghurt and smoothies, and scatter over salads or bread dough before baking. They thicken anything wet if left to stand, so add them close to serving unless a thicker result is what you want.
